Guinea & Snakes

I got some once to eat snakes. They wouldn't stay around the house. And they are LOUD. I have heard of them eating snakes though.

They will eat the smaller baby snakes, but they can't eat the large ones...and by the time they reach my hen house they are large snakes...scary ones. the thing is they will also make such noise that they will deter the snakes. Snakes like it quiet, or so they say.... I try not to be around them to know.

Chances are if you're seeing fewer snakes its because there is no food there for them. I removed a three foot black snake that lived in the ceiling of my Guinea coop last Fall. It took me all season to finally catch him.

Last year I saw more snakes than we've seen in years around here. The end of the drought meant there was a bumper crop of food which turned in to a bumper crop of snakes.

I had copperheads in the flower beds and porches all the time before guineas and turkeys. I haven't seen one in the yard for years!

Guineas will eat the smaller snakes and they'll 'run off' the larger ones. Geese are good for running off snakes too. The only snake I've seen since I got my guineas and geese was a 12" garter snake in the mouth of a RIR hen
