Guineas with chickens? Is that possible?

I have heard that you can't put Guinea males with chicken males, but what about the females? I have really bad mosquitoes, so I really need some Guineas!

I had 12 guineas (11 female, 1 male) with my hens. I had no problems, they each kind of kept to their own. I found the guineas to be *way* too noisy and rehomed them. They never really left the yard to free range so I didn't have the benefit of them eating the bugs.... my chickens actually free range all the way around my house now.

Thanks! I live out in the country, so the noise won't bother me.

It can be done. I don't know about intergrating adult guineas with adult chickens, but my hens hatched ten guinea eggs and all of the keets lived(lost 2 to dog attack). So far they have tolorated each other pretty well.I had some trouble with the top hen and a guinea, but they've calmed down now.
If you open your windows on summer days and nights, make sure you house the guineas as far away as possible. My guineas are so loud, I dreamed about them and woke up and the sound was still there.

Guineas usually always boss chickens somewhat, but nothing to worry about. They may not bother them at all. You can put both sexes with chickens, I don't know why anyone would have told you that mattered haha. They help with mosquitoes, but not alot. The best thing to do would be to hang up a bug zapper, and make sure you have no kind of barrels with standing water, or put a small amount of clorox in the standing water to keep them from breeding in it....I hate mosquitoes! The biggest predator of them are bats and purple martins, you can hang up nest boxes for both of them and get them to start coming around. I believe I read each one can eat a couple thousand mosquitoes in one night.

I am working the same situation. My pullets are 29 days old and in the coop already. I have 4 Guineas that are 20 days old and still in the house. I am going to merge the two flocks (10 birds total) this Friday or Saturday. I am hopeful that nothing will happen, but don't really have any choice now.

Good luck!

Sometimes a happy coop can depend on which breed of chicken you are raising your Guineas with. There are easy going docile breeds and mean cranky bullies. So the bigger your coop/run situation the better everybody will get along. Most of the issues (if you are going to have any) will be during breeding season. Too much testosterone, lol

. 3-4 sq ft per adult Guinea in the coop is what's recommended, then factor in your adult Chickens' space requirements, and if possible I strongly suggest you build bigger. Try to provide plenty of perching/roosting areas for everybody so there's no crowding and fighting over the top roosting spots. Also if you can, provide 2 feeders and 2 waterers so everybody gets a chance to eat and drink. Hiding places for low birds in the pecking order are helpful too. When they are all old enough... plenty of free range time helps everybody burn off pent up energy and cuts down on a lot of the aggression problems.

Best of luck, hope you have one big happy flock!

Hello

I have had chickens and guineas together for 2 years now!! They got along GREAT until last fall and our rooster he was a rescued ex-(asin wasn't good enough to make it) fighting breed;he was being protective of a hen and her small clutch... He had never shown any aggression towards my kids or the guineas until after momma began bringing her chicks into the open and a guinea got a little to close... It was a horrible thing to witness and we relocated him to my uncles house where there are no other birds for him but his ladies

So with that said I still have 6 guineas (3male 3female), 7 barred rock hens 2 game hens (the babies rooster was protecting) and a new rooster that is handled all the time and not aggressive... and everything is copasetic (I've been looking for a time and place to use this word)

Good luck!!

I love my fowl!!!

I should also add though that my birds free range and roost in the same tree at night

Only if they are closely confined will the male guineas pick on the roosters. If there is plenty of room, you won't see much picking. The guineas usually range much farther than the chickens. We have guineas and chickens running and roosting together on the farm, and haven't had any problems.
