Gurgling chicken and Biaprim

Hi, we had to rush our large Sussex, Sammi, to the vet Christmas Eve as she was sneezing and gurgling very badly. The vet gave her an antibiotic and a steroid injection.
She also gave us a bottle of Biaprim (Sulfadimethoxine and trimethoprim). We have been putting it in the water for the five chickens for five days 10mm in 2 litres of water. Today is the last day. Sammi is doing very well with no signs now of gurgling or sneezing.
We have been putting the eggs to one side. When can we safely eat the eggs as they are delicious and the shop bought, even the bio ones, at not a patch on ours?

SMZ-TMP, bactrim, sulfatrim, and Biaprim egg withdrawal is not exactly known, due to a lack of studies in chickens. It is not approved for chickens in any country, but it is and has been been prescribed in the past by vets to treat coccidiosis, coryza, and fowl cholera in poultry.

Meat withdrawal is 10 days according to poultryDVM website, and in Australia, egg withdrawal is 10 days. Most drugs used in chickens that are not approved probably need at least 2 weeks egg withdrawal, and most would be safe by one month. It is just hard to officially say, since so little studies have been conducted, probably die to it’s being banned.

Many thanks for that. Our normal vet was on holiday and the relief vet wasn’t too sure on treatment or dosage. She had originally said 5mm in 1 litre of water but our containers, which fit onto the Omlet run, hold around 3 litres. If we used smaller containers there was a risk they’d get tripped over so we went for the 10mm in 2 litres. I’ve tried to translate the French instructions but it doesn’t make a great deal of sense.

Wonders if they did studies?

They sited a study done in 2001 and 2003 in Belgium, but the whole study results were not available.
