So one of my hens has (on top of Egg Yolk Peritonitis...which I've been treating) a Vitamin Deficiency, and is unable to walk. She doesn't really eat anything either when I hold it up to her. So I have been feeding her some stuff, which you can find in Appendix II.

I'm hearing a gurgling sound from her though. And twice, five minutes apart, she blew a bubble through the side of her beak. It was big, and it got a thin clear layer of slime on that side of her beak. I checked her tubes and both are clear, and unobstructed. Her mouth and throat are clean as well.

I don't think it's a respritory disease, though I'll keep a lookout for those.

I think I was administering the stuff too far back in her beak, and some of the water went down the wrong pipe...whoops...I'm trying to give her the stuff near the front of her beak now.
:barnie

So my question is...how do I get the gurgling to stop?

The thing is though, that the gurgling usually resolves itself, and isn't on every breath. It's just getting more frequent.

Do I even need to do anything?

When a hen of mine sounds a bit stuffy, which isn't very often (every 1 to 2 months, I use sand bedding), I hold a small paper towel corner, which was dabbed with Eucalyptus, mint, etc. oil, in front of that hen's nose, for about five minutes total. That works 90% of the time. Would that help?

Would squirting air down her throat help somehow? It sounds crazy, but I figured I'd ask. I'd just use an empty squirt bottle, make sure it has zero water, and squirt.

Below are two appendixes, one on how I know she has a vitamin deficiency, and another on what I've been feeding her.

APPENDIX I: VITAMIN DEFICIENCY

I know that my hen has a vitamin deficiency since, when I came in the morning to let my hens out, this hen was on her side and had a wry neck. She was walking, though less active than she had been say, two weeks before, the day before. I had been giving her a Children's liquid multivitamin, and I've seen rapid progress. The first day her neck wasn't as bent, then she was resting on her shanks and not her side, then her wry neck was completely gone in three days. She's still on her shanks, though. This is day 5. She is also pooping out white and green poo again, an opaque liquidy kind. On day 2 she was pooping out clear green stuff. She has been in a kennel, in the same coop and run as her flockmates the entire time. No signs of diseases on the others.

APPENDIX II: FEEDING AND WATERING

Here's what I've fed her and watered her.

- Hard boiled egg yolk, crumbled into very tiny bits, mixed with water.
- Hard boiled egg white, crumbled into very tiny bits, mixed with water.

She goes through 1 egg a day.

- Purina Organic Starter/Grower feed, mixed with water.
- probably 1.5 ml of that multivitamin, spread out at the start and end of the day.
- Water, fed with syringe.

- Apple Cider Vinegar (crop)
- Colloidal silver, 1/8 tsp (EYP)

Last night I gave her a little bit of spinach that I blended up. This too was mixed with water.

If there's anything you can suggest to help with the gurgling, please leave it below. Your time's appreciated, thanks. :)

UPDATE: Okay, so despite the bubble her gurgling has stopped. I'll repost if more happens but as I said earlier I think it was the way I fed her that caused the gurgling.

It's all good for now!

It's sounds like this poor girl has a lot going on, can you take her to the vet?

If she aspirated fluids, then likely that is where the gurgling is coming from, but you also want to check to make sure the crop is emptying overnight.

Read up on how to give oral medications and tube feed if needed, these methods are safer, if done correctly, than squirting fluids into the beak.

Please do not squirt air down her throat, you may rupture lungs or air sacs.

Is she on antibiotics for the egg yolk oeritonitis? Was she diagnosed by an avian Vet? Was her abdomen drained of egg yolk stained fluid? If she has ascites from the egg yolk peritonitis, that can make it more difficult to resolve a respiratory issue. Sounds like that ya go e now? Is she still on her shanks? How is her breast muscle? Is it wasting away? I think she needs more of the grower feed. If wetting it down makes it more appetizing for her, great! Having said that, I had a hen with EYP and was desperate to get her to eat anything at all, so I understand the egg and spinach. Good luck with her and please keep us posted.

I don't have any vet diagnosis, but she is a 4 yr old Barred Rock and she had night lighting used for a year or two of her life, so an egg-related problem isn't out of the question. She's definitely got abdomen swelling. The HBE (Hard-Boiled Egg) is in there to contribute a significant amount of protein to her, as her breast muscles are depleted and her keel is sticking out.

I've dealt with EYP before in another of my Barred Rocks in January of 2017. With the oil of oregano and occasional garlic she lasted until August 26th - her swelling went down several times. This hen isn't as fortunate...though she's lasted from December until now.

I found a hard thing of pus beside her vent this morning...so I think she has Salpingitis. There is a bit of poop on the outside of it. Her bloating had swelled up in spring and I've had her on Oil of Oregano, some garlic in the water every so often (as I kept her with the others), colloidal silver, and the multivitamin for most of the time...I stopped in May, but that was a bad idea in retrospect.

The original post was about the gurgling - I think it had to do with the way I was feeding and watering her. I already knew she was weak and so I didn't ask about that.

Probably can't take her to the vet - and I doubt anything can be done at this point. Even if the gurgling is resolved, there's still the Salpingitis. Then there's the crop issues, and her lack of muscle mass, and her vitamin deficiency or whatever's causing her to be unable to stand (her toes are all curled like a fist...I can open them but she closes them back up when I let go).

I've been trying to determine what's going on with her crop. I can't tell if it's sour or not - though she's been getting plenty of ACV for that.
