Gypsum to control odor in the chicken yard

Has anyone heard of using Gypsum to control odor in the chicken yard? My supply store recommends it, but I wonder if it's safe.

* I tried 3 or 4 places down here to get some (for my grass, not the chicken pen) and they don't even know what it is!!!
