I'm going to gently suggest that a bullet is far less likely to distress an animal compaired to gassing or poisioning. I can't see the use of poision as there's too much room for error, either an unintended animal eating the poision, or that animals' remains killing whatever eats it later.
The problem with releasing an animal is that you can not move it without breaking the law (the ones that are also meant to stop spread of disease that relocating can accomplish). If you're going to catch it, and then release it within the 100 feet that's allowable by many laws, what is the point of trapping it, other than to anger/scare it?
It's not a macho thing, it's a sensiable thing, animals should not be moved out of thier habitat into another, to do so puts the animals, people, and wildlife in the released area at risk, as well as the well meaning trapper who is risking attack to open the cage.
Some things just make no sense. Reality just isn't pretty sometimes.
