Had a 3 y/o hen with black diareah/drainage yesterday.

She was getting around fine. Went to check on her this afternoon and clean her, she was dead. Vent and buttocks full of black dirt/tar sticky substance. No other birds affected. ???Could that have been a vent block/soft shell and mixed with our black dirt. Never saw anything that look like egg yolk. Just thought she may have eaten to many greens?? Any ideas. Very quick. Thanks.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately, there's no way to know the cause of death like that without a necropsy and/or testing. If you have another pass in a short period of time with similar signs, then refrigerating the body and sending it to your state lab would be a good idea.
