I recently bought a 4 month old miniature horse foal as a companion to my grandsons Haflinger mare. I asked the owners not to wean her until at least 4 months old but they went ahead and did it at 3 months. The Haflinger - Sugar immediately acted like this foal was hers. Yesterday, my grandson rode Sugar for the first time and the foal was pacing at the fence. As soon as I put Sugar back in the barnyard, the foal began to nurse her for a good 5 minutes. Later in the day, we saw her doing it again. I haven't checked the mare to see if she is producing milk but I suppose she could if she was suckled enough.
Anyway, at least the foal is getting some much needed Mommy comfort!
