Hi all,
I have an AC/CCL mix chick with struggles.
She hatched fine 3 days ago. I noticed maybe 15minutes after she hatched, a different chick in the incubator was pecking her bottom, then I saw yolk leaking out. I disinfected her and stopped the bleeding, then bandaged her with a makeshift "diaper". That emergency was fixed, her bottom is very healthy now.
I took off the diaper-bandage yesterday, and it has given her splay leg :(
I made a foot splint to help (a small rubber band knotted in the middle, squeezed through a straw piece, holding her feet in place) and I've been giving her an electrolyte/vitamin water mix for the past day.
I assume that due to her yolk partially leaking out, she does not have as much nutrition as other chicks. She is standing better, regaining strength, but she won't drink or eat on her own.
Now I'm worrying about the food...
At 3 days old, should I give her mashed up hard boiled egg with chick feed? I've never had to hand feed a chick before, she kicks her feet and wiggles constantly, but she doesnt peck at stuff. Not even when it is in front of her nose. What is the easiest hand-feeding method, and what to feed a 3day old? (Also, should the feed be medicated, after what shes been through?) And how often... I've been giving her water every 2-3 hours.
Thanks all,
Raptorchick

Can a chick be syringe fed ? Like if I ground up chick feed maybe with water, and syringes tiny amounts into her beak ?
Yes you can syringe feed chicks. Best done with a narrow gauge catheter tube attached to the syringe. Use a 5ml syringe and bear in mind that it doesn't take a lot to fill their crop.

Also, she's falling forward on her face pretty often... I have her surrounded by "walls" so she has space to stand and take maybe 2 steps, but cant completely fall over. She sometimes crawls out (shes extremely active). Her eyes are getting injured from her falls, and shes keeping them closed today.
I dont want them to get infected or damaged.... is neosporin in a 3day olds eyes safe/will it protect them? Or should I not worry about that, focus on her legs and eating ?

Can you bring her into the house while you try to save her?
One of those plastic pet carriers for dogs and cats make great hospitals.
Fold a couple of soft towels and lay them in the bottom.
I don't know about treatment for her eyes I'm afraid. Hopefully someone else will.

Yes, she was actually the last to hatch, so I cleaned the incubator and am using it as a mini hospital.
Why didn't I think of towels... thanks again. Right now the bottom is cabinet liner to help her grip, a towel would definitely soften her falls.
