Handling roos as chicks

To tell you the truth I handled all my chicks the same not knowing whose the Roos and who's the hens. The Roos get more aggressive with more Roos and less hens. If you have a rooster that is attacking you do try to handle in more, pick him up and carry him around if he comes at you. Do not run stand your ground, and if he touches you aggressively then chase him and pick him up. Good luck!

I don't handle any of my birds very much, and hardly at all once they're past the cute chick stage. I treat my birds as livestock, not pets. I treat my roosters as intact male livestock, same as I would treat a buck goat, etc. I respect their space, but they respect me more and yield to me when I need to work around them.

x2. I do really like the Speckled Sussex hens, who tend to be interested in me in spite of not being hand fed treats, etc. I enjoy my birds and interact as a close observer, and don't try to make them into lap cats. Mary

I do handle all my birds be they chicks or adults and this includes all the Roosters. I have kids who are around the chickens a lot of the time, and who have there own chickens as pets. All the birds here are friendly and can be picked up or touched without fear of them harming anyone. It also helps if any of them have a problem because they can be handled. Saying this there respected and respect all of us, some of these birds are for the table and some are breeding stock, a few have been lucky enough to become pets who will remain with us until there natural time comes and I have to step in .

The way I look at is this I handle and work with my Stallion and young studs because they need to be able to be non aggressive and easy to work with and around. There not pets and they are well respected and respect me back. I do the same with all our livestock including the Bull. Would I trust them? Not entirely because I know what they can do on a bad day when there thinking with other things than there brains. I do the same with my Roosters. I also don't keep any birds, horses or livestock that are aggressive or have any tendency's to attack or not respect our space. As soon as any prove aggressive they have a one way ticket to my freezer or the vet in the case of a horse.
