Hello!
I just wondered if anyone have helped eggs to hatch, and how the chick(s) did afterwards?

I have helped a total of 5 eggs (two different hatches) with the result of 2 good chicks and 3 chicks i had to cull. The 5'th egg i did not intend to help, but it was waaay past hatch date, it was the last one and i thought it was dead, so i opened it and found a very alive chicken who had yet to withdraw the blood from the membrane. Unfortunately it died as it was way too weak after 4 days trying to get out (it pipped with the other ones, but did not zip)
Two of the eggs i helped had zipped, but could not get out = one good chick and one with severe curled legs (legs, not toes)
The other two pipped in the wrong end and did not zip at all= one good chick and one without eyelids.

I'm a bit ambivalent about helping eggs that does not hatch on it's own, but still. The two good chicks would have died if i did not help out, and for the weak ones.. They would have died on their own anyway, the only hard part is to cull them myself instead of letting them die on their own.

What are your thoughts?

I've helped the odd eggs to hatch. Sometimes it's successful and other times not. I had one quail that had pipped and not progressed for 36 hours, so I helped. It lay on it's side twitching for ages as though still going through the spasms of hatching, and I was sure it wasn't going to make it. But it did - by morning it was running round the incubator peeping for some friends. But other times I haven't been successful.

I like to give chicks a chance as, with incubating them it's sometimes our fault that they don't make it out whether there was a dip in temperature at the wrong moment or the humidity wasn't quite right. But it's a personal choice and it's up to you whether you decide to help out or not.

My first batch hatched just over 3 weeks ago and I had to help two.
The first one pipped the wrong end of the egg and never progressed after about 24-36hrs. I zipped it and took the shell off completely. Took it about an hr and it was up and walking.

The other one that I deshelled still had a small yolk sack. I raised the humidity to 85-90, highest I could get it and it stayed in there twitching and kicking for 18-24hrs before walking. I was sure that little guy was gone for, but it's still alive today.
The other lived also.

I used a gun cleaning pick to help remove the shell. Something like this

Your English is great, would not have known it was a second language. :)

I help anyone out that needs help but I feel like my late hatchers are the ones that have splay leg or failure to thrive. I try to do what I can to help, sometimes they self correct, sometimes hobbling helps with the splay leg and sometimes they just don't survive. I do like to give them every opportunity to survive though.
