I've read in numerous places that you can hang a head of cabbage for treat/entertainment. What type of rope/twine is best/safest?

I found one of these at a yard sale for $.50. Works perfect. We usually free range and don't offer many snacks but if we are going out of town for a few days we leave the birds in their run and hang a cabbage in one of these.

I just hung three cabbage halves in the chickens' runs yesterday. I have these short (foot-long) flat rubber bungee cord thingees with very large S-shaped hooks on either end...very heavy duty and I've had them for years. Usually use them to hold the run doors open when the birds are out foraging. I needed a hammer to pound the ends of the hooks into the cabbage half stalks, then managed to pull them the rest of the way through, then hung the cabbages off the chain link panels of the runs. Just the one thick ribbon strap so nothing to get tangled in and the hooks are very thick, too thick to cause any real damage if someone gets poked.

Even so, I didn't trust the clumsy buff Orpingtons to NOT somehow find a way to hurt themselves on any sort of hanging contraption, so they got their cabbage half served cut-side up in a big ceramic dog bowl. They'll make a mess and scatter partially eaten leaves all over their run eventually, but whatever... Makes 'em happy...
