My family is pretty new on the chicken ownership. Our family bought 5 chickens 16 weeks ago and only have 2 of the original ones left. (1) was sneakily taken on the trampoline by my 3yr old when it was a chick and (2) were killed by a neighbor dog a couple weeks ago (grrrrrr). We replaced them as soon as they were gone but both experiences were pretty traumatizing. One of the replacements is older and currently laying eggs so it made it easier for the kids. I have invested more time in the building of the coop and run than I have on any other projects Ive done to date. I finished the nesting boxes yesterday. 4 months?...yes and my wife is grateful to have me back. We decided to go the less expensive route and build our own coop instead of spending $600 on a pre-manufactured one. $800 later I think we should have bought one pre-built. lol.
"WE LOVE OUR CHICKENS" and only a chicken owner will understand what I mean. We have (2) EE's-18 weeks not laying yet (1) silver wyandotte- 1yr laying 6 days a week Woo Hooo!, (1) brown leghorn-8 weeks?, (1) red sexlink -18 weeks not laying, (1) welsummer-18 weeks not laying, (1) cinnamon queen-12 weeks?. All of them are named.
I have never eaten a fresh egg that was unrefrigerated until yesterday. Big difference in my opinion. Love love love. We are so happy our little urban town changed the ordinances and allowed chickens.
