This may seem like a silly question.. and I am a very silly woman with a very sick toddler....

He has flu like symptoms and I am taking him to the pediatrician in an hour or so.... but I thought I would ask.

I know there are no cases of "avian flu" in the states... but the internet is a scary place and the more I looked...the more freaked out I became!!

I am sure it is just a virus of some sorts, but it doesn't hurt to ask......

We haven't. But it's always a good idea to wash hands after handling them.

Nope, but especially young children stick stuff in their mouth so washing is important. My kids are old and not had an issue, heck they have the call babies running around in their room everyday...

(their babies in my defense lol)

Ok... He has Strep! Not duck related! I have had some family members shaking their heads about our decision for ducks..... I didn't want them to be right!

Now I just need my sweet Henry to feel better!

Poor kid! BTDT, actually my oldest got scarlet fever at 5yo. People don't know, they just assume farm animals are dirty, frankly the kids indoor playground is worse, WAY worse lol

You can catch lot so things from animals, humans for that matter: Look up "Zooinosis" (spell). But if you don't eat their poo....

and wash your hands after feeding, cleaning, etc. you are fine. I have 2 grandsons I babysit for and I let him see the ducks and geese and sometimes pet them. But we are careful to wash hands before they get them into their mouths. We also wash off sandals for the "goose poo" when we come in, (I have separate outdoor boots).
You can get Salmonella, parasites, worms, rabies, Cat Scratch fever (from cats), tricionosis, lepto something... list goes on from a variety of animals...including your dogs, cats , cage birds, turtles... then there are roaches, bees stings, scorpians, snakes ,etc.....

. Just use common sense.. and don't let things get nasty indoors....like feces left around house (welllll.....some people do....and they get on Tv.
