I read in a book once about a barn made with a rock wall. On the outside of the barn that rock wall was the back of a fireplace. When the fire was burning it heated up the rocks and warmed the barn. Because the fire was on the outside, there was less threat of burning the barn down. It sounded like a really cool idea. Of course, you'd be out in the weather getting the fire going, but it might help on those really cold nights to keep everybody toasty.
