I've never had trouble making avatars either until yesterday. I tried to replace mine and kept being told it was too big even as a .gif.

I've been having trouble as well. My avatar saved as a jpg is 8KB (8000 bytes), but BYC is saying its too big

The gif version of my avatar that I loaded is actually a bigger file than the jpg was, and gif killed the quality

I think its a problem of it just not accepting jpgs for some reason.. hm.
