Between your Texas material and Pete's material, a person could be very much on their way to successful incubating!

Pete has a very good tutorial on how and when to intervene. Many here discourage intervention. I have used Pete's techniques with great results. It has saved the lives of some expensive and healthy birds. I have no problems with putting-down a poor bird. But, I very rarely have to do so. The overwhelming majority of the birds we've assisted have become healthy and strong.

Side Note* We evacuated from here as hurricane Katrina approached our coastline. We couldn't find a place to stay until we reached Texas. We stayed in a campground, with cabins, at the southern-most tip of the Toledo Bend reservoir. We soon got word that our house had 4 feet of water in the ATTIC! We will never forget the wonderful Texans in that town! Me, my wife and 4 sons now pull for Texas teams, Texas politicians, and Texas spelling bee contestants! LOL You Texans are some great folks!!
