OK - First ever hatch & it was a home made bator.

38% hatch rate.

Not quite what I wanted - but OK.

I had originally set 58 eggs - but by the end I found 16 of those were complete duds - either the ring of death or not fertile I'm not sure (actually 3 were good, but my candling was bad).

So 42 made it to lock down & had a fighting chance. 16 hatched - 1 of those died, 2 were shrink wrapped & needed help.

So - the remaining 26 eggs were fully developed & never broke into the air cell.

I popped a few open & here is my conclusion.

1) I struggled to get the humidity up for hatching - I really couldn't get it up over 50% - way too dry. Of the eggs I opened - all had dry membranes & none of the chicks broke into the air cell.

2) I used the carton method - paper cartons - They may have wicked some moisture from the eggs. I'm not sure - because all 16 that hatched were right in there with the rest of them. In any case - try # 2 I will use plastic cartons.

3) When I reached in to remove the chicks I felt a cold draft coming through one of the vents where the turner handle comes through the side. I had left these open thinking the extra venting would provide air. Next time these are getting closed when I remove the turner.

The good news though - I have 2 welsummers & 13 black australorps!

I'm hoping on the wellies I have 1 boy & 1 girl. I want a wellie rooster to breed with my aruacaunas to see if I can get some dark green speckled egg layers!

Well congratulations on getting some! I just finished my first hatch too. (well, i'm giving the last few a couple more days) Out of the 10 that made to lockdown, 6 hatched (4 wellies, and 2 ameraucanas)
if you're like me, you learned A LOT from this first hatch, and will be making some mods and diving right back in!
Nice Work!

Thanks! Congrats on getting some too!

Correct on the mods! I have two water wells (bowls with big sponges) that are of decent size, but not near large enough for what my needs are.

Plus - I built the incubator out of scrap cedar boards I had left over from a picket fence project & it was super dry wood - I covered everything except the underside of the lid with foil faced insulation board to help with this - but I'm going to figure out a way to seal the lid from moisture too. Maybe just some good paint - kilz or some other good thick stuff.

I am going to try my next set with my own eggs though - I have a black silkie rooster (wee man) that has been keeping the girls entertained since I lost my main roo. They may be seriously strange looking if any hatch!

Good luck on the next batch & hope your last 4 pop soon!

If I remember right, yours is a cabinet bator right? I'm going to make some changes to my igloo-bator, even if i never use it again, cuz that's just how I am. But I am really thinking about making a cabinet incubator/hatcher from an old broken refrigerator. Frig section as the bator and freezer section as the hatcher, separate thermostats of course.......What could possibly go wrong??

Great idea! Yeah mine is a huge box. I started out trying to make it a cheap as possible - but in the end I decided I really needed the thermostat. It will hold 96 eggs if I turn them just right! - honestly though I wouldn't want that many going into lock down - the 48 I had this time (6 were duds) was crowded -

One nice thing about it being this large is I have more chances to get something to hatch - even if it wasn't as many as I wanted.

Too right. When I built my incubator from an old 54 quart cooler, I thought myself "why make a big one, I'll never want to hatch more than 2 dozen at a time"..........yeah right!
Did you use a wafer thermostat?

i also started out cheap, but ended up getting a used ronco temp controller... best investment ever... the good thing is that this is a learning experience for you... this thursday is going to be my first hatch on my DIY bator... gonna have to take notes and diagnose everything just how you did... now you know what to improve on it now...

happy hatching...
