First, let me say I've had chickens for about 5 years now, have raised chicks (day olds in the mail or local breeders, not incubated at home) every spring for the last 3 years. I decided I wanted to try to hatch some fertilized eggs this year, and literally the next day my Buff Orpington goes broody. So much so my hand is now a mess from her pecking me when I was trying to get eggs the other day. So at the suggestion of an experienced chicken friend I picked up a nice rabbit hutch see if I could get some eggs hatched from her. I transferred her to the hutch at night, with dummy eggs in place in a nice nest in the interior area of the hutch. She sat on them readily, a full 24 hours, so I ordered the fertilized eggs, which will be here tomorrow.

This morning, she was up and about, nervous. Wouldn't go back to the nest. I checked on her for about 90 minutes and she was still prancing around. I'm incredibly concerned now, as the eggs are on their way, and my broody buff isn't so broody! One of my australorps was also showing broody signs, so I could try her instead if I come home later and my buff is still prancing around.. but I'm so concerned for those little eggs on their way! I don't have an incubator, I took what I was going to spend on an incubator and got the hutch to try to let nature do its thing, but now I'm really worried.. any tips?

The hutch is near the main coop, (outside of it though) with a large separation wall between them. The articles I found were conflicting if I were to leave the hen near the main coop, or to completely take her away from it, and set the hutch in the garage, shed, etc. Maybe I should move it?

Have you checked on craigslist for an incubator? Usually you can get one for around $30.

Or you can try to rig one out of a cooler.

Another idea would be to put the hen back out with the others but make her a little pen - maybe a wire dog crate? - so that she's not nervous but still has her own area.

Good luck!

I've been combing craigslist like a fox... there are more listings for 'incubators wanted' than for ones for sale, and the only ones for sale are huge cabinets right now.. sigh... I just don't have the know-how or the time to assemble one on my own.. if I get desperate I'll call our local feed store and the TSC that about 45 mins away and see if they've got anything.. I've researched brands and have a few I'd really like, but I don't want to rush out just to buy something and not get the incubator I really want.. but I'll do whatever I can to save those little eggs! Just need to get them started by Saturday..

TSC carries Little Giants (still air). I have one and it's done fine - I hatched 9 of 12 shipped eggs last year (that was the best hatch, the others weren't quite so great). You can buy a fan kit from ebay eventually to convert it to circulated air which will end up being a decent incubator. Or just keep the still-air as a hatcher (that's what I'm doing).

I just called our local Southern States.. they do have the LG still air incubator for $44.. Do you think that your other hatches weren't great because of the LG as an incubator, or just nature being nature? I might go pick it up anyway, it's a good price and like you say, I can use it as a hatcher down the road. I'll keep the hutch too.. I'm sure there will be another broody hen.. but after the horsey vet visit yesterday, I'm about ready for some of those eggs to be gold
