Hatching eggs

Hello. i have a little lack Silkie that has been sitting on eggs since around the first of Feb. Eggs take around 21 days to hatch don't they? I can hardly wait to see what she hatches.

You are correct, but it can vary a little either side of the magical 21 days. If you did not collect eggs and then set the eggs under her, the success rate may be limited and its likely that you may have a staggered hatch, which can also put a spanner in the works. Either way, I do hope that you have some little ones running around soon!

We will have a staggered hatch. We took all the eggs out from under her once and the poor little thing insisted on having some babies, so we let her go. I tried to sneak a larger egg under her and she rolled it out with her beak. We have a very colorful rooster and also a white silkie, so I can hardly wait for them to hatch.I hope we at least get a couple.

They sound like they should hatch soon.. My hen just had her first babies and they hatched about 3 days apart.. she also had a third egg that she was sitting on for another week.. she got tired of sitting on it and abandoned it.. this was my first time with babies hatching also I thought that the last egg was bad because she gave up on it but unfortionatly it was not.. it only needed another 3 or 4 days and it would have hatched but I did not check the egg and just assumed it was bad.. the baby died. I have another hen sitting and I know a lot more now then I did.. just be patient and let them take there time..

Also if this is her first babies she is hatching keep watch over them to make sure she does not look like she will turn on them.. some hens are very protective and other turn on there babies... if they do turn on the babies then you will have to take every other ones that she tries to hatch away. if they attack once then they will do it again..

Its best to remove eggs on a daily basis, and then put the eggs under a broody to set if you want a synchronised hatch.

thank you for your advice. This is our first year at trying to hatch chickens. We stated our flock last year and have learned volumes!!! I've ordered more chickens for this year. I've been selling eggs and can't keep up with orders. I love to sit in the yard and watch them. Most of them have names. LOL!
