My biddies are due today so I went out to peek under mama broody to see if there had been any progress. What I found was an egg that she had obviously stepped on. The membrane was still intact, but the shell was all broken and had some missing. I really expected it to be dead, then I saw it move under the membrane. I broke just enough out of the top to see that he has his beak through the air sac.

I have him under a lamp with a thermometer to make sure it's the right temp, and I have the bottom part of the egg wrapped in a damp washcloth. Is there anything else I can do to improve his chances?

I also got in with a toothpick and moved back the membrane just far enough that one nostril was uncovered.

Thanks!

Jess

*UPDATE*

So far so good. He made it out of the shell and is now sleeping with my other little cuties. So far I have 3 out, 4 pipped and 3 more that I'm still waiting on.

I know that you have wrapped the bottom part of the egg in a damp washcloth, but s the membrane still moist? Really all you can do is try and keep the membrane moist and the egg/chick warm (around 100 degrees) and just watch and wait now. You don't want to help to much just incase the yolk sac hasn't been absorbed all of the way. Keep us posted on the progress and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for your little chick!

The membrane had dried out a good bit when I found it, but since the washcloth, it's looking better. I've helped my fair share of chicks out, I don't like doing it, but when worse comes to worse I will.

Thanks for the quick response, I figured that I was doing things right, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't forgetting something

I wouldn't be so panicky if DH was here. He left not 15 minutes before I went to check for physical therapy. He's usually the one that takes control when we have a chickie problem. I should have said, I've assisted in helping out my fair share of chicks. DH is the one that actually does the c-section, I'm just the nurse
