I just now took out two of the trays from my automatic egg turner and set the eggs in them instead of using an egg carton for lockdown...

Is this a bad idea?

I have never hatched this way before. I have always just laid the eggs on their sides in the bator at lockdown.

Any advice on either method before I get too far into lockdown and there is no turning back.

The trays are not attached to the turner in any way... no risk of squishing...

the advantage of the cartons is that after you can pitch the mess along with the catons instead of scrubbing it off the racks. I think hatching in the rack or carton is good for the chicks. it gives them something to brace against while hatching. I just put 3 silkies, 9 std gold laced cochins and 10 silver penciled wynadottes in lockdown today
