Hatching Issues

i know everyone says never to assist in a hatch. And I probably never will..again. This morning I got up and one of my eggs that was 2 days past due pipped the wrong end. After several hours of no progress I decided to help. I see a lot of bloody membrane. The chick is breathing but doesn't seem to be able to move its head around to continue pipping. I wrapped loosely in a paper towel but it looks like a lot of gooey membrane. Will this absorb entirely? Should I wrap it all the way in wet paper towel or just loosely with a hole?
Any advice appreciated

When any eggs are two days late hatching I will help any that are pipped out. The reason is that if they stay longer than that they continue to grow and then may be crippled from being scrunched in the shell too long. You could keep it wrapped loosely in the paper towel. Does the chick still have some of the egg shell around it?

It does still have most of the shell. I removed the area around the beak. When I hit the thick bloody gooey area, I stopped and put it back. I hope I did not cause unneeded problems

I think what you did is okay. They may be hatching late if your incubating temp was too low. I would keep on eye on the exposed membrane to not let it dry out.

I just wanted to come back and update for someone that may experience this in the future. I ended up putting some polysporin on the membrane to keep it from drying out. I worried and worried. The next morning I woke up to this

So my little chickie survived it's assisted hatch. The membrane did fully absorb.
