i found my buff orpington sitting on a clutch of eggs in a pile of straw. Her eggs are still medium eggs (if that) Is there enough room for the chick to form, or will it die?

I know they say you shouldn't try and hatch pullet eggs, but last month for the heck of it I put a marans pullet egg in the bator because it was so nice and dark. It was the first one to hatch and pretty much popped right out like a piece of popcorn. Now I wish I'd have stuck some more of hers in.

Some will hatch, some won't even form. It's not that they NEVER hatch, it's more that they don't hatch as well. If that's what she's sitting on, and you want to try for some little fluff balls, let her be.
