My cross silkie was sitting on 2 eggs and we thought they probably were not as far gone as we thought. I went to check on her today and surprise a baby chick under her ! I was so excited. It was not wet and quite fluffy so think it was born early in the day. The other egg under her we do not think has anything in it or has died. So I will remove it in a couple of days if no good. My question is how long will chcik stay under mum and do we leave well alone ? Will baby eat by itself with mums help ?? Thanks in advnace Beryl

I would to. Keep her and the chick away from the other chickens becaue they can try to kill it. Some people don't have a problem with chicks being in with the flock but with my experience I would keep them far away. Thats why I have different pens around the yard. Different aged chicks, or chickens that just don't get along with others.

Sorry I seem to have misled you. The silkie is in her own accomodation which consists of a straw nest at ground level inside in a nice warm draught proof house and a 6 x 6 foot run attached completely separate from the other chickens. Luckily we moved her last weekend. I am wondering when the chick will be independent and venture out from underneath her ? And when it is safe to handle the chick ? Sorry for confusion
