Hello all

I have chicks that started pipping on day 21, and have hatched on days 22-23 (today). However, out of 29 eggs I only have 5 chicks out and two that are hatching now. I can’t think of anything that went wrong during the incubation process as I have had steady temps and humidity. Could more still hatch at this point? How long do you give eggs to hatch?

TIA

Sure they could but you should candle them to see if they were ever even fertile. The rooster may have been lazy or just slower than the hen.

heres a rundown on candeling. Based on my reading here it sounds like temp's may have been a little off perhaps the incubators built in gauges are a little out of calibration or somthing.

Hope that helps.

Hey there! I am on my second batch of incubated chicks and have noticed a HUGE improvement since adding my own Hydrometer and Temp gauge. After loads of research, it is so crazy the amount of things that can go wrong but don't lose hope. My first hatch only provided one, but she is truly so cool it makes up for the other (12!!!!) not hatching. Come to find out a few weren't fertilized, the digital temp on my incubator wasn't accurate and shipped eggs are a catch 22.. I highly recommend candling on day 18 for movement before you lay them down for lockdown and getting local eggs. Don't give up!

Thanks for the answers guys! Sadly I made the mistake of assuming a brand new incubator would be calibrated and no other chicks hatched. Two of the chicks that did hatch had curled toes. Since I had such bad luck the first time, I pulled a $200 thermostat with a temperature probe I used for incubating ball pythons and used it to check my incubator and the incubator was reading 4 degrees cold. I also bought a hygrometer and calibrated it and my incubator was reading 10% low on humidity. So, now I have a new batch of eggs incubating with the adjusted temperature and humidity. Fingers crossed for a happier ending this time!
