HI all, my name is Jason Hughes and am just starting to think about building a coop and getting into raising chickens mostly just for eggs. (I can't even bring myself to kill the last goldfish in my 5 gallon tank and he's been hanging out by himself for 6 years now! His name is Harvey, but I digress...)

I have always had a love for animals and gardening--started five years ago growing my own tomatoes and peppers and now my veggie garden is 100 yards by 25 yards filled with corn, pumpkins, beets, lettuce, tomatoes (three types), cucumbers, onions, potatoes, and any other type of seed I can get my hands on, and loving every minute of it. I have one dog and one cat, and aforementioned fish, but want to branch out and think chickens are the way to go!

I've been browsing a bit and know you all are a very insightful, helpful, and knowledgeable group of folks--seriously!--and hope to take advantage of your wisdom... I'm going to begin browsing hardcore as this is the year I want to build the coop and hopefully next spring get a flock of chicks (only maybe six or seven I think), but if nay of you know any must-read posts for colder climate coops, care and maintenance, how many eggs I should expect, or anything else you feel may be relatively helpful, I would greatly appreciate it! I've been browsing the many creative coops that have been built by you all and am amazed at both your creativity and know-how...

Well, I suppose that's all I can think of to say at the moment, but I can't wait to jump in and get my hands dirty (feathery?) with a hobby that so many seem to love and enjoy!!
