Have I done enough?

I do not think the fence install looks to have been a lousy job--it is a common way of installing a fence on a slope. Is it the way I would have? No, but then I would not have installed a wooden fence to begin with.

Since the fence is on the property line, you can do what you want on the side facing you. Since you are merely trying to keep your chickens in, you don't really neeed to worry about the strength needed to keep predators out.

You can run chicken wire or even plastic hardware cloth along the bottom and staple it to the existing fence posts, or you can use landscaping stakes to hold it in place. You can use the step-in posts and run your own fence parallel and adjacent to hers. Another alternative is getting landscaping blocks and placing them along the bottom of the fence, blocking the holes.

Here is the staple gun I prefer for wire: http://www.arrowfastener.com/products/manual_tackers/79055020257/
