Hi! BYC has opened my eyes to a whole realm of chicken paranoia regarding reproductive issues in hens so now I'm curious- how do I know if the hen in the nesting box that isnt going back up to roost is broody vs having a problem? She looks normal, but I know that egg problems get bad fast so I am curious what to do. Broodiness is normal for my birds, so it's definitely not out of the question.

My initial plan was to just kinda feel around for a bulge and put her on a roost if I dont find one?

I can usually tell by how they're acting. My hens don't get upset with me when I mess with them in the nest box...unless they're broody. If you've had other broody hens I'm sure you're familiar with the ticking time bomb cluck and the puffed up velociraptor screeches.
Are you seeing something different this time that is making you think otherwise? Sometimes you just need to go with your gut and start checking her for other signs of an issue if you're concerned.

nothing different, no. it's just that I never realized they could have so many egg laying problems before haha. I will see if she acts broody then.

This was an extreme example. Most of my broody hens are NOT this bad but even a low key version of this could mean she is broody.

I have this

Oh no! Be aware when there are mites on one that it's likely that there are mites on others because they're nasty little critters that can be tough to eradicate. I don't know anything about that product but permethrin is supposed to work really well. I keep some on hand just in case.

well I just spent 2 hrs worming everyone
