Saturday a hawk came down from the sky right after my silkie, She managed to escape by running into the our shed. I went and got her the first thing she did was let out this horrible scream. I held her for about 30 minutes, she seemed to be just fine. When I put her down no signs of injury nothing, head held up and walked right into the coop. That the next evening, she's laying on the bottom of the cage life less barely breathing. I picked her up and her head just fell, she acts as though she has absolutely no control to the neck. She moves her mouth and tongue but nothing to the neck, almost like her neck is broken.. At first I thought she was egg bound because I could see her trying to get and egg out. I put her in warm water and managed to get it out but had to hold her head up the entire time because again it would just fall.. Today 48 hours later still no signs of improvement. I thought for sure she would pass today but she is still breathing. Every 30 minutes or so, I did notice she her entire body would jerk. Head life less but rest of her body would jerk forward. Almost like she's having some sort of convulsions or something. I have no clue what do to, I tried to fed her but it only made the jerking movement worst and more frequent. I don't have the heart to cull her but not sure what else can be done at this point.

Maybe it's the aftershock of the hawk scare. I've heard that a hen can stop laying after a big scare. Poor girl. I'd sure keep her comfy and allow her to rest. After my girls were traumatized by a dog attack last year some of the survivors laid around like they were nearly dead for a couple days before they started moving around and I was able to determine where they were hurt. I hope your girl will pull through.

DId there heads go absolutely limp? Because that is what she is doing, just absolutely limp. Honestly, I'm surprise after 2 days that she is still breathing, I thought for sure she would have passed.

Sadly enough this female black silkie didn't make it which probably is the best thing since she had absolutely no neck control. She survived for 3 days and then lost the battle. She had thick clear liquids that came out of her mouth, not sure what that means..

I am sorry about your chicken.

You can do a search for hawk cd and you will find people who put up shiny metallic creations say that it messes with the hawks and protect the chickens

I'm sorry that happened.

Maybe it was shock? I know my rabbit went into shock after a bobcat passed by. When I went to feed her, she was limp and unresponsive but still alive. I tried giving her treats and soothing her but she died several hours later.

Its just hard to believe that after one day after the almost tragic my silkie would go into shock but I then again nothing else makes sense as to why she would be dead. I know she was fine after it happened because I was holding her in my lap for the longest time, but when I checked on her the next day there she was no use of her neck at all. Poor girl perhaps if it ever happens again which I hope not. Perhaps I'll bring her in for a few days to keep an eye on her.
