Hello, dear Chicken Community,

My beautiful 6 year old BO was attacked by a hawk last Sunday. Middle of the day and I heard nothing. Somehow she fought it off; I found her looking spooked under a bush with a big handful of her feathers lying around. I am so glad she's OK!!! I saw the patch on her thigh where the hawk had grabbed her feathers, but there was no blood, no limp, and she was walking fine. There was a drop of blood on her beak, which my son thought might've been the hawk's, but I don't know. You can see it dried there in one of the photos.

After that I kept my birds in their run and coop until today when I finally let them free range again. That's when I picked her up and saw a bright green bruise and a gash from the hawk's talon. She is eating well and getting around fine, no limp, though I noticed she did not jump up the way she does to enter the coop. I'm wondering if the wound looks OK or if I should do anything for it. By human standards it looks like it is healing nicely. Any thoughts on whether I should put any ointment on her? Does the bruise look like it's healing? All the photos are from today, a week after the attack.

Thanks so much for your thoughts!

To me, it looks like it's healing fine on it's own. The bruising can take time to go away.
If you want, you can put a little triple antibiotic ointment on the wound to help keep it moisturized, she may pick at it if you do, I don't know.

It actually looks good! You’ve done great. Just keep doing what you’ve been doing. You can also apply Neosporin (without pain relief) to keep bad bacteria at bay.

Thank you, Nendei and Wyorp Rock. I am so relieved - we love her so much!

Any thought on the blood on her beak? Did she get nicked? Or could she have drawn blood inn the scuffle?

I’m so sorry! I can’t imagine how scary this can be.
Is your house in a community with houses next to you? I saw a hawk yesterday watching the chickens from a tree in our backyard but I was out there with them! I wonder if it would attack with me being outside?

It's possible it could attack with you outside - lots of different factors.
