Hawk dropped a hen in friends yard!

The hawk that lives up near my buddies house was circling overhead yesterday as we put up the roof on the new run.
I could almost see the dissappointment as we stapled up the shade cloth.

I never really thought hawks would bother an enclosed run, but they do.

I was at my buddy's house, who has lots of chickens. We watched a hawk grab a cat, carry it into the sky & drop it. It was horrible. I do know they have the capability to do that to a chicken. There would be severe wounds on the bird tho.

That of course depends on the airspeed velocity of an unladen hawk.

Is it an African or European hawk?

I agree, You need to check for injuries, try to find her owner and quarantine her.

I ended up with a stray about 7-8 weeks ago. We drove around, for several hours, asking if she belonged to neighbors. We are in the country and it seemed strange that no one could/would claim the chicken. I would have been going crazy NOT knowing what happened to one of my girls..

So, I checked her over, for mites, lice, injuries.Went ahead and dusted her for them...then I kept her in a tiny coop for almost 5 weeks far away from the other chickens, then I moved her closer to the coop so they could see her, then a few days later I moved her into the run (in an area that I had divided from the big run) and put her into a crate at night, inside the large secure coop.. She would fight the other hens thru the fence and one day I came home and someone had let her into the big run and she was doing great..

If your friend has a small yard she may not be able to quaratine her far away.. So, she will need to decide if she is willing to put them together (slowly) with the chance that she may be sick and cause all three to die or become ill and weak..

My little Sassy , laid her first little cream colored egg, yesterday... Well, worth the effort.

A friend was just telling me that she came home from work and her pen, that had shade cloth on it, had a hawk inside that had killed 10 of her pullets. She said that there was a 6 in. tear in the corner and she didn't think anything of it. The hawk got in but couldn't figure out how to get out I guess. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Huh? I don't know that.

AAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I would think it has to have puncture marks at the very least. yes quarentine at least 30 days but I would also try to find the owner. did she see it happen?

But if your new birds showed no signs of illness the same thing would have happened at the end of the quarantine, wouldn't it?
