HAWK!!! Just happened!

Sweetie made it through the night. Somehow she made it to the top perch so I didn't try to get her down to treat her. Will get her this afternoon.
The funny thing is they WON'T come out of the house, any of them. It's almost as if Big Boy the roo told them to stay put after yesterdays incident. They are usually out the door faster than I can get it opened. Whose to say, maybe they sense the bad weather coming today... it's already 70 degrees here and they are calling for severe weather this evening. Nonetheless, I'm glad they are staying put.

Dang!!!
I think I would've needed clean undies!
We had a juvenile RedTail sitting right outside the window of my dining room like it was a drive through...

I don't blame them for not wanting to go out...
Glad that Sweetie made it through the night.

Super glue is the ticket! In medicine, it goes by several trade names, though Dermabond is the most common. The medical form is basically the same as the store glue, though the latter is more irritating to the skin.

You'd hate to traumatize an already injured bird, and you can't exactly shave a wound in prep for suturing, so...glue it!

1. If you don't have betadyne, pour a little hydrogen peroxide in the wound after it is cleaned out.
2. Let the wound dry...best you can, that is.
3. Apply the glue and hold together. Use paper napkin to hold, otherwise you WILL glue your fingers or your tweezers to the wound.

I'd suggest that this be a two person task. Have the hen's head covered at the time to help calm her.

Normally, I'd recommend an antibiotic ointment, though it may compromise the glue.

You should get her to a vet ASAP! Even if they don't normally see poultry, they can still prescribe the correct antibiotics for her!
For now....
Get a cardboard box and wrap her in a towel and let her alone. Stress will kill a chicken.
She may even lose all of her feathers from the stress of the attack.
Once you get her on the antibiotics, you will be surprised at how quickly chicken skin heals!
My hen was attacked before Thanksgiving and other then being chronically blind in one eye, she has come back. She lost all of her feathers, her head was crushed and she was torn up pretty bad. We thought she was dead when I finally got my hands on her. (I had to chase down the hawk!) She also had a mini stroke. But with the right meds ASAP, she has survived. She was a rescue case when I got her and had survived a pretty rough life. She had the scars on her eye lids and waddles to show it! If she was willing to fight for her life, so was I!
Good Luck. I will keep you and your hen in my thoughts.
