Hawk netting?

I have never had that problem, and I live in the woods with a lot of coons. That said, my backup plan if it ever happens is an electric wire around the top of the wire. That is what several people have told me they did since they didn't have any netting on top of theirs.

First off,hawks hunt with the wind during the day.....coons hunt at night and morn,this means there is no need for "netting from coons"as long as your flock is in and out at the right time.

I use what they call deer netting. It's very strong, almost like a plastic type of mesh. It was a huge wide roll and got it at TSC. I think I paid around $20. We just pulled it snug across the top of the fencing and secured it with zip ties.

We have the netting from Lowe's and I've got to say that it will withstand a lot of weight. Hubby and son were putting new shingles on the coop this weekend and son lost his balance. He's 16 years old, is just shy of 6 feet and weighs 190 lbs. and the netting held. Not only did the netting save him from serious injury, it proved that my hubby did a great job in installing this netting. I guess the answer to your question is based upon your area, your budget and what you trust. I think everyone has their own opinions on what works for them, but the bottom line is you have a lot of information of different things that work. I also got my deer netting at wal-mart. My dh and I constructed our run out of a chain link dog run and made a top for it out of a wooden frame and chicken wire and wrapped the base in chicken wire. We were going to use the deer netting too and purchased some but I still could rip it with my fingers; so we decided on the chicken wire instead. The wire has bowed in and I hit my head on it everytime I go into the run. Should have saved my $$ on the dog run and just put up the fence posts and enclosed the run with chicken wire. Would have spent less with the fence posts, will be larger, and it will look WAY nicer! Live and learn...
For the run I should have and will use wooden pre-drilled fence posts that I can form into a cube like box and staple the chicken wire all around it. My 8 x 12 coop looks great though...I'll change the run next season!

Hi Amy,

Finally made it to Wal-Mart last night. The brand is Gardeneer (two e's before the r) and it's called "plastic fencing." Actually it doesn't say anything about birds OR deer on the package.

You need to keep one thing in mind however....the smaller the opening in the netting, the easier it will be to trap ALL YARD BIRDS. We covered our fig trees one year and a robin got stuck in one and died....so that was the end of that!

They have deer netting, bird netting, etc., but the openings are what you have to be careful about. If one gets caught, you will have a nightmare trying to REACH it to free it - alive or dead.

We just ran KITE STRING across the top of our fenced in area- which is heavily treed and created a huge, strong "net" or "web" that no hawk would even think about flying into!
Not hard or expensive....just use 4 large rolls and a 5-foot ladder and you're good to go!

I have one more roll to go and that should do it. They are only allowed into the cove during the day WHEN we are home! Otherwise, the coop and 14-foot covered run only!
