So, this morning one of my girls was attacked by a hawk. Somehow she didn't get any other injuries than getting her eyelids scratched a bit. That said, I can't tell if she can see. She went into shock, but seems to have come out of it. One eye has a cut on the lower lid and she has been keeping iy closed. It's also slightly discolored ( possibly bruising) her other eye has a cut on the top part and was weeping a ton at first, but seems to have stopped. She is in a box in a dark room right now so she can sleep. She hasn't had alot to eat or drink. I got a baby medicine syringe and gave her as much water as I could, then got her to eat a blueberry and a small amount of yogurt. Then she fell asleep.

Anyway, I am curious of the best way to treat her eyes. I don't want her to end up with an infection. She has recovered well so far, I am just concerned about the coming days.

Thank you for any help!

She looks like a very pretty salmon faverolles. Sorry that she was attacked. I would get either Terramycin eye ointment, or Vetericyn eye gel or eyewash at your feed store, and use in the eye twice daily. If the injuries are only on the outside, you may be able to just use plain neopsorin ointment. I hope she recovers okay.

Thank you!! I was at TSC today and didn't even think to ask about anything for her eyes. I'll have to get back there tomorrow.

I edited my above post to say that you could use plain neosporin ointment if the wounds are just on the eyelids, not into the eye.

It goes right to the eye. That's why I'm not sure if her eyes are injured. She stopped bleeding quickly, but I'm not sure how deep it is. Thank you, again!

Her eyes have been opening and she reacts to sounds, but she is barely walking, isn't eating on her own and still keeps her eyes closed most of the time. When she does open them it seems like she can see something, I don't know how well yet. The concerning thing is her head slowly moves when it should be still. I'm thinking head injury? She doesn't try to run away from me when im giving her water, just turns. . . Not sure what I should do at this point. Planning in giving her more time, but she has me nervous.

Only time will tell if she has injuries or if she is still traumatized by the attack or not being able to see. I would keep her confined in a basket or wire dog crate very close to food and water, and offer them to her.

Hold some chopped egg, tuna, or liver up to her beak, and offer some electrolyte water up to her as well. The better she eats and drinks, the more easy to see if she will recover or deal with her eye problems.

Look for any cloudiness in her eyes which could be signs of damage or infection. I do hope she heals, but we never know how things like this will turn out.

I've been giving her electrolytes in water. ANd yogurt. Today I mixed it with some yolk. She'll eat for a little while, but now that I'm thinking brain injury I'm worried about overstimulation. Thank you!!! She seems a little better every few hours, so maybe by tomorrow shell be all set.
