Hay for litter

Again another question. We have ample supply of older hay. Is it OK to use this as litter on the floors and nesting boxes. We are kinda strapped for cash right now so doing this as cheaply as possible without potentially hurting the flock is key. What are peoples thoughts on hay as a floor litter.
 
I use it in my coop with a little DE mixed in with it. It composts great.

I use hay sometimes just because I sell it and it's so much cheaper. As long as it's not moldy, go for it! When I clean the goat house out I throw the old hay out to the chicken run for them to scratch through for a couple days. Then I toss it out into the woods. I quit using hay in the nest boxes because my girls have been pooping in them so bad lately. It's easier for me to use a little shovel to scoop poop out of the boxes when they have shavings in them.
