Hi There,
So we finally live where we can keep chickens. We have never kept chickens before and are so excited that we have jumped in head first. The original plan was to just keep 4 hens. Then a friend needed to rehome her 6 seven month old hens. I thought that taking them on was a great way to start with chickens since we wouldn't have to wait 5-6 months before the start of laying if we started with chicks. Then my mom, who kept chickens before I was born which was long enough ago, said "Oh you just have to raise some chicks, they are so fun" So we went to a local hatchery and purchased what we were told were Ameracauna's. After much reading on BYC I have come to the conclusion that they are Easter Eggers. Either way, we are just after colored eggs, so we're happy. We are dying to know what color they with feather out in. Here's a picture of them the day we brought them home, Sunday, June 30, 2013. I'm guessing they were just a few days old?? Until they prove otherwise they are named Chicquita (the light one) and Ginger (the dark one)

The 6 we adopted from a friend are 3 varieties. We have 2 Silver Laced Wyandotte's (now named Isabelle and Raven), 2 Barred Rocks (now named Ricky and Fred) and 2 Easter Eggers (now named Swainson, after the hawk, and Cluck). when we get some better pictures of them I will happily post them. They are all such nice birds. We can handle and pet them and they are so cute how they quite down and listen when you talk to them. We brought them home this past Saturday and spent the weekend putting the finishing touches on their coop/run. That's it as my profile picture. I think we did a pretty good job for our first attempt.
I have found BYC to be so very helpful and informative and am looking forward to being a part of the backyard chicken community.
