KH, I have to share this with you. As a youngun,my father helped my brother and me learn about snakes. Identifying, habits etc. He had learned thru Boy Scouts in Delaware how to appreciate them and convinced our mom to let us have them in terrariums. He went to California on a business trip and bought a gopher snake to bring back to us. (this was in the late 60's) . He "borrowed" a pillow case from the motel he was staying at and told them at checkout that they needed to charge him for it. He put the snake in his briefcase and carried it on the plane with him,put the case in overhead luggage with the case cracked open for air. Years later(and well before the movie Snakes) I asked him what he would have done if the snake had gotten out. His comment was " I'd have stood on my seat and screamed like everyone else!"

Really enjoyed your snake identity story. Here in the Ozarks, we have Water Moccasins, Rattlers, and many different non-poisonous ones. I have met several Water Moccasins and Rattlesnakes, but found that they preferred to avoid human company if given the option. It's a battle to keep those who brush-hog and mow from deliberately killing any snake they see, so I hire the one who doesn't do that!

That makes me mad when I catch a bush hogger doing that on my property. Why go out of your way to kill something when there is no reason to?
