I will be getting a batch of 25 day old chicks the beginning of March and another 35 first of June. They will be in an outside brooder (4'x8'). We have used the standard red bulb heat lamp in the past. However, I wanted to try a heating plate or the MHP (mama heating pad) method.

1. Are the large heating plates really able to handle the number of chicks advertised?

2. Can a MHP cave be made big enough for this many chicks in a single brooder?

3. Or should I just build a small hover with a ceramic heat emitter bulb? (Trying to give a more natural day/night routine without 24hr light)

Thankful for any input.

I had 16 chicks under a 16x24 Rent-A-Coop heat plate, that was designed to hold 50 chicks (according to the manufacturer). And it was definitely too big for what I needed. But worked perfectly for me. It would definitely hold 25-35 chicks no problem. If you go with the heat plate... Splurge for the no-roost cover. It'll save you a LOT of time cleaning poop off the top of it.
