heat lamp location for chicks

Hi everyone. I just bought 6 chicks tonight and this is my first time ever having chickens!

How high up or how close should the heat lamp be to my chickens?
I have them in an extra large dog crate right now.

It looks too close but it depends on the wattage of the bulb. I'd stick a thermometer in there and see what kind of temps your getting on the floor under the bulb.

! Pleased you joined us! I usually let the chicks "tell" me by their behavior. I make sure they have room to move to cooler or warmer places in the brooder.
