! Pleased you joined us! It's really about temp than distance and outside air temp as well. Larger watt bulbs = further away. I keep mine about 12-15" above for newborn chicks but I get them early in the spring and keep them in a pretty cool basement. The chicks "tell" me by their behavior and where they cluster around the lamp. Good luck to you!

Be certain your lamp is well anchored and will not fall on top of the chicks. It also should have a wire guard to protect chicks from coming in contact with the hot bulb. If they crowd under the lamp - they are cold. If they move away from it and sprawl apart they are too warm.
