Heat or no heat?

Try not to over think it. Ever think about how a ring-neck pheasant can survive North Dakota winters no problem, with no shelter? Similar plumage I'd say to northern traditional breeds.

Here's a clip out of wikipedia I've experienced living in ND: during December, January and February, the high reaches freezing on only 18 days, and the low falls below 0 °F (−17.8 °C) for 50 days per year. [1] Cold weather and snow will occasionally extend into April, although in general the winter weather begins to moderate in late February or early March. The lowest temperature ever recorded was −43 °F (−42 °C), most recently on January 30, 2004.

Have raised chickens for years in a drafty old barn with straw. Never had one freeze. Forget the lamp and the insulation work, unless you like higher electric bills and random bonfires. Maybe it's the 24/7 country radio that keeps them warm!

Do what makes you happy!
