My first set of chicks we got in winter so we used a heat lamp to keep them warm. It's now the middle of summer and I just got 4 new chicks today. We were around 90 today so I didnt turn on the lamp. Chicks are doing fine. Sleeping spread out, not huddling, and eating/drinking fine. Tonight/tomorrow morning we will get to 70. I wanted to get a heat plate but everywhere local is sold out. Should I turn the heat lamp on? They're being brooded outside in the coop with our big girls so I dont want them getting hot. We do have good ventilation where they roost and the babies are towards the front of the coop.

Cuteness pictures also because I'm obsessed.

The lamp is ok as long as they have room enough to move away from the heat if they want/need to. The first few days it is needed at night, even if it is warm in the daytime. They can't control their own temperature, they have to be able to move in and out of the heated area.:D

Ok, they definitely have room to move away. I'll turn it on for tonight. I ordered a heap plate so fingers crossed it doesnt take too long to get here

I have an indoor/outdoor thermometer that I can look at their temp and adjust the height of the heater. I put it in the corner under the lamp in the photo. It is not there yet in this photo, though.

We have a thermometer also. I know it was definitely hot enough during the day. We will get over 100 this week. I just wasnt sure about tonight when it drops a bit.

They will decide how warm they want to be by moving in and out of the heat. If there are no cool places, they will start screaming loud, you can hear them from outside!

I have them in an extra large dog crate and the lamp in one corner, the food and water on the other. They definitely have enough room to move away from the heat.

Sounds good to me! Just keep your eye on them, see if they are crowding together under the heat = cold. Far side from the heat = hot. All over, just right! Just like winter, only lots easier!
