Heating a coop?

Okay, so new chicken owner here. Do I need to add heat to my coop for winter? The lowest temps we usually get are in the teens.

Generally, it's optional, but can depend on the breed. Some are cold hardy while others are not. What's most important is providing a draft-free coop with proper ventilation.

I live in northern VT where it can be 20 below for weeks at a time. I heat during those super cold times, but generally, I don't. I do keep the water heated, though.

It gets pretty cold here as well. We’ve had temps below 0 F and the chickens were fine. Just make sure you have good ventilation in the coop to prevent humidity building from their feces. Bitter cold humid air can lead to frostbite.

Okay, thank you. It sounds like I shouldn’t need heat in my coop but probably do need to patch some gaps in the wood!
