Ok, I'm planning to build my own coop, but I'm wondering if I should put heating pads in the nesting boxes so the chickens stay warm in the winter. Is that a good idea or not?

The chickens should not be sleeping in the nest boxes.
If you live in a region where day time temps stay below freezing and you work away from home, heating the nest boxes is a good idea to keep eggs from freezing. But don't heat with heating pads. Use seedling heating mats.
