Hello everyone! Well I am new to the BYC website forums. I actualy just ordered some baby chicks and they should be arriving around August 3rd. We are all so excited here at our house.
We ordered three different breeds. I really wanted the Easter Eggers but my husband wanted some others two. So in the end we ordered Easter Eggers, Wyandotte (golden and silver), and Australorp. They are all going to be vaccinated so I think that is a plus.
I was wondering if anyone could give me some great insite on the breeds that we have chosen. If you have owned, seen, or been around. Anything would help. We only have a little experience with chickens and it is explained below.
We had 4 chickens given to us a while ago and they were all supposed to be hens. We were so excited my husband had been wanting to get chickens for a while. And we just got four free. They were about 8 weeks old we were told. Well as they grew the black ones started crowing
then we figured yep those are not hens. The brown ones never crowed so they must be the hens. A couple of days later we walked out to check on the chickens in the morning (can't sleep threw that rooster) and one of our hens was still in the roosting box. Called for her and she didn't come out. We opened to box and she was dead. We picked her up and there were 4 scorpians under her. (poor girl) We then gave one of the roosters to a friend who has a farm and had room for an extra rooster. The one rooster and hen were doing fine or about a week after we got rid of the other rooster. Our rooster started getting really mean with the hen. Everyone we talked to said don't worry he is trying to mate with her. Well we got up the next morning and she was dead in the run we have. She had blood marks all over her back. Our guess was the rooster killer her. So away he went the next weekend, we didn't want to keep that one rooster we originaly wanted hens for the eggs not an awnry rooster that we were scared to put anything in his cage with him. After all of that the roosters are doing great at there new home and we ordered baby chicks to start over.
