In the Brooder
Hi there! My name is Stephanie. I'm a homeschool mom, artist, jam maker, gardener, and homemaker. And a bunch of other things too, but my list was getting long! We live in a suburb of Kansas City, MO. Our backyard is about .2 acre, but we make the most of it. In addition to chickens, we have 4 dachshunds and a morkie, who we call our "honorary dachshund" because her dachshund brother and sisters have fully accepted her. All the dogs get along with my chickens just fine. (supervised closely, of course.)
Here's my answers to the sample questions:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have had chickens for about 5 years now, but dreamed of keeping chickens for long before that.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 4 adult chickens and 7 chicks. 4 more day old chicks on the way in 2 weeks!
(3) What breeds do you have?
gold laced wyandotte, blue laced red wyandotte, olive egger, 2 black silkie bantam chicks, 5 mixed blue and green egg layer chicks (not sure of the exact breeds of those, ordered them as an assortment), and 2 polish bantams and 2 anconas on the way.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Since we are a homeschool family, the chickens are a fantastic learning opportunity. I have my coops set up so that I can look out my kitchen window and see my girls. I love having a variety of breeds. The entire family enjoys that each chicken has her own personality. My city boy husband has become quite the chicken keeper. All the girls come running when they see him! I'm sure it's because he bribes them with mealworms.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
crochet, baking, collecting cookbooks, antique kitchen items, sewing, embroidery, diamond painting, nature hikes, birdwatching
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I sell jams and herbal products at a local farmers market. Hopefully, next year I will have eggs to sell. Right now we only have 4 layers, and that keeps my family in eggs. My husband is a welder, and is learning jewelry making.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I came here to learn about why one of my silkie chicks was so much smaller than the other, and what to do about her pasty butt issues. Got all the answers I needed, and decided to become part of the group.
