Hello Everyone,

I am new to BYC but not "totally" new to chickens in general. Was around them as a kid at my Dad's house during our weekend visits and summer break. I recently acquired an American Bantam Rooster and Hen. They had belonged to my Mother-In-Law whom passed away in April. My husband and I decided we would take the chickens (I don't think any of his brothers or sisters wanted them anyway)

. She only had them a little over a year. They were brought to our house and I also ended up (as I have been wanting chickens for a bit now for some fresh eggs) getting 3 more

. 2 Orpington Hens and 1 Australorp Hen. My husband finally got our pen/coop finished today. It's not huge but big enough for the 5 total chickens. The bad thing is when we put them in the pen today, the Bantam Rooster and Hen attacked the other chickens. I had to separate them again. I thought since it was new teritory to All of them it would be okay. Boy was I wrong!!! Now I could use a little advice on what I can possibly do. I have them in a separate cage (for now) and they are next to the pen. Hoping in a day or so maybe we can try again.....I really appreciate any suggestions and I can't wait to get to know everyone and pick your brains on Chickens!

Glad you joined the flock! Might want them to get used to each other with a fence in between. Also you might want to think about getting some more hens. Each rooster should have about ten hens, otherwise the hens get pretty beat up. Good luck

Welcome to BYC! They have helped me with all kinds of questions. I don't know the solution to yours, but I will be interested in hearing what experience others have had with this. And if it resolves over time with what you are doing, which sounds like the wisest path, it will be interesting to know how that goes and how long it takes. Good luck!

i agree...just try to get them used to each other through a fence.....or get a bigger coop so they have the option to get away from each other..

Welcome to Backyard chickens. The best way to introduce new birds to established flock is the "see but don't touch," method. If you can, use a wire divider to partition off your coop and run. Have feed and water on both sides New birds on one side, established birds on the other. In this manner they can see each other without any bloodshed.

After a few weeks, you can remove the partitions while you supervise them. There may be some minor scuffles to sort out peaking order but, as long as no one is getting injured leave them be.

Thanks for the Welcome and advice! I will be doing just that, keeping them separated for a bit. We made a make shift pen right next to the other one and have them split up and none of them are just in a cage any longer. I'll see how they do in a week or so.
