We have 2 Peking ducks and the female has been sitting on her eggs for 30 days. Today my daughter went to let them out and she found all by 1 hatched but dead. The female was still sitting on half a hatched egg which I immediately removed from the nest. Now the issue is that the dead ones all still had a large yolk sac still attached and now the other one who is still alive and now in a box under a heat lamp has fully hatched itself but again, still has the yolk sac attached. From reading online, they may have hatched due to the heat? We live in Chicago. What should I do with the surviving one. It seems to be getting stronger and moving more as the day is going on and peeping on and off, but it is so weak. Please help! What should I do for this poor little duckie. My heart is breaking and my daughter is devastated. I thought we were prepared, but I didn't expect this.

Welcome to BYC! :ya
Sorry about your baby ducks, hopefully the duck will survive...
Keep the duck warm under a heat lamp with plenty of food and water for it to drink. It will probably be okay. :)

Thankfully birds do not nurse their young. Anyone can take over feeding and growing them out. When you put out feed or water - tap it with your finger to get the duckling's attention. If it doesn't drink, gently dip it's bill into the water so it understands. The heat may have caused them to be born too soon. I don't know how long ducks eggs take.

Is the drake in with the mother? I wonder if either of them or both, broke the eggs rather than the chicks trying to hatch itself. I would suggest grinding the duckling food to make it smaller and maybe dampening it a bit, to make it more palatable. It would be best if you posted on the Duck thread, where experienced people could talk you through this.

To keep duckie from being lonely in the brooder. You can provide a small stuffed animal for him to cuddle with. Also if he has a mirror in with him, he will think he has a buddy.
