In the Brooder
Hello BYC community. My name is Mike, I live in southern Maine and have finally entered the world of raising chickens after wanting to do it for a really long time. I've started with a mixed flock of 6 hens,(buff orp, blacked laced wyandotte, red sex link, back austro, easter egger, barred rock) and a Speckled Sussex roo. I wasn't planning getting a rooster, but he seemed determined to join our family so we're giving it a shot. So far, so good. They were all 16 weeks when we got them last month.
I came upon BYC before starting construction on my coop/run in early Spring. I can't thank you all enough for the incredible amount of resources and information made available on this site. It has helped us be so much more prepared for our venture into backyard farming and our flock will certainly reap the benefits. I check this site almost daily as I navigate the chicken world.
3 of our hens have started laying. My kids love to go out and get the eggs. Though we live on 2 acres on a dead end street, I have not let them free range on the yard yet. Really wanted them to get adjusted to their coop-run first. I'm also worried about all the predators in our area. I know of 2 great horned owls in the trees around my house. We have a small compost going in the run and the birds love to pick through it daily looking for new treasure. They are so fun to watch!
I could go on and on -- but again, thank you all for your helpful contribution to this site. I hope to post and contribute more as we go along.
